Fleurhof runners ready for Comrades
16 runners from the Fleurhof Runners Athletics Club are set to tackle Comrades Marathon.
The Fleurhof Runners Athletics Club is battle-ready for the prestigious Comrades Marathon, with 16 of its members prepared to tackle the gruelling 89km route from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday, June 8.

In the spirit of Comrades and camaraderie, the group of runners hosted a send-off run this past Saturday, which included a 5km and 10km route around the neighbourhood, which was well attended by club members and friends of the club. The team also received their T-shirts for the day.
After the run, members enjoyed a motivational talk by guest speaker Shahieda ‘Makhi’ Thungo, a seasoned Comrades runner who has completed the race seven times and has driven the sub-12 bus for all her finishes. Makhi shared valuable tips and words of encouragement with the team, particularly the novices, who will be tackling the journey for the first time.

According to club chairperson Makgaba Manabile and vice chairperson Busisiwe Mzizi, the club’s participation in the Comrades has been steadily increasing, with one runner completing it in 2022, two in 2023, and nine in 2024.
This year, they are proud to be sending a strong contingent of runners to tackle the iconic ultramarathon.
“The club was founded in 2021 by a group of passionate runners in the Fleurhof neighbourhood and has experienced rapid growth, expanding from 10 members to 65, with over 50 ‘friends of the club’ also joining the fold.
“Today we are sending last words of encouragement to the runners, making the club visible and also offering our novices support,” said Makgaba and Busisiwe.
The team meets every Saturday at the Shell Service Station on Helpmekaar Road, Ext 3. Whether you’re a seasoned marathon runner or just starting, you’re welcome to join.
