The sound of cheering parents, determined young players and goals celebrated with pride filled Wanderers Discovery Soccer Park as the Spring League got under way. From brave tackles to impressive saves, the opening day brought plenty of excitement as young footballers took to the pitch, eager to test their skills and enjoy the beautiful game.

League director Kefentse Mahlo said the response from players and parents had been encouraging. “The Discovery Soccer Park Spring League has been an incredible success so far,” said Mahlo. “The turnout from parents and players has been massive. From goals being scored and saved to the roar of the crowd, everyone is having a fantastic time.”
With the first matches kicking off at 08:00, the action moved steadily through the age groups, while the clubhouse kept families energised between games.
Mighty Cubs and Tuks B competed in a U7 fixture during the day’s matches. Both sides battled hard for possession, with players chasing down the ball, putting in determined tackles and refusing to give their opponents an easy ride.

Despite Tuks B’s efforts, Mighty Cubs found their rhythm and made their chances count, scoring twice in the first half before adding a third goal shortly before the final whistle.

The 3–0 victory earned Mighty Cubs the win, but both teams walked away with valuable experience in a match that demanded focus and teamwork.
Tuks B coach Wandile Makhanya said there was plenty to take away from the tournament, despite the result. “It has been a great tournament so far,” said Makhanya. “The team performed well in their first two games, though there is always room for more preparation.”
Makhanya added that the emphasis remained on helping the young players grow rather than focusing solely on results. “We aren’t worried about the scores,” he said. “Our main focus is on individual player development and continuous improvement.”
Mighty Cubs coach Sheldon Harrison was pleased with his team’s response to a challenging opponent. “It was a great performance in a difficult match,” said Harrison. “We had to adjust quickly because they were quite a strong team, but our boys kept it together and held control of the game.”
Harrison also praised his side’s defensive efforts, highlighting the contribution of their defender in helping the team secure the victory.
While the opening day’s results provided plenty to celebrate, the Spring League is about more than the final score. It offers young players an opportunity to learn from one another, build friendships and develop a lasting love for football.
With the competition running until November 15, there is still plenty of time for the young stars to make their mark on the pitch.
