Havdallah, which comes from the Hebrew word meaning ‘separation’, is a religious ceremony that marks the end of Shabbat and Jewish holidays, and the beginning of the new week.
Grade Rs at Yiddish Folk Pre-Primary School, which falls under the King David Schools network, learnt to celebrate and appreciate the community spirit and essence of Havdallah when they were taught to hold the ceremony.
Havdallah is a ritual that traditionally engages all the senses. The ceremony usually involves lighting a special braided candle, as well as blessing a cup of wine and smelling spices. To learn the beauty of Havdallah, each one of the Grade Rs made his or her own Havdallah and took it home.
