Great level of intimacy through sewing

HOUGHTON - King Edward Preparatory School (KEPS) has joined the 67 blanket drive for Nelson Mandela Day and paraded around their blankets on 15 April.

Patrick Rivers, a Grade 6 pupil at the school, proposed the campaign to his fellow pupils and educators five weeks ago.

Communication was sent out to all pupils and their parents to participate in the drive. Today KEPS has collected a total of 95 blankets. Over 2 000 knitted squares were collected which were then made into the blankets. Parents, grandparents, pupils and teachers all put in a collective effort to knit as many blankets as possible, The teachers also had a knit-off to sew as many squares as they could. The challenge has brought the children together and educators did not expect such a great turnout.

The young boys have shared a common interest of sewing and have been unified from the blanket drive.

The aim is to challenge every school in the country to make as many blankets, reaching a world record of 21 000 blankets that will be displayed on the 21 April on the stairs and lawn of the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Every school that completes 21 blankets will be given the opportunity to win one of the 21 prizes of R21 000 each for their school from Cell C.
