Pupils create historic wall

PARKTOWN-NORTH - PUPILS from the Baobab Learner Centre were recently given the opportunity to decorate and paint a long wall leading to the entrance of the Witwatersrand Origin Centre.

The wall, which took two weeks to complete, was inspired by the rock paintings inside the rock art museum. The painted wall is a collection of paintings from the Baobab Learner Centre pupils, who worked together to create a remarkable piece of art resembling that of the San.

“All the [pupils] painted and had a hand in creating the wall,” said Barbara Hollman, head of the centre.

Hollman added that Barney Paint, Emmarentia donated paint for the pupils to use.

“[The wall is] so fantastic, so artistic, so well thought out and it fits nicely with the centre and garden. All the staff and everyone who visits the museum comment on how beautiful the wall is,” said marketing manager of the Origins Museum, Scott Allen.

Art therapist of the school Juanita Child explained that for many of the children, art was a form of expression and relaxation. “Art allows them to express what they verbally can’t.”

The Baobab Learner Centre is a home schooling support centre which caters to children with special needs and learning difficulties.
