The school is trying to qualify for the competition for the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day. Parents, teachers, volunteers, as well as ambassador from the drive, will be at Norwood Mall for the next two Sundays in an attempt to get as many squares or knitted blankets for the primary school.
Schools are able to enter by either knitting together 21 blankets or squares which will be sewn together afterwards to make up a blanket. These blankets will be donated to those in need.
Norwood Primary School is on holiday, and teachers at the school, as well as the 67 Blankets team, encourage parents and pupils to knit during the holidays to be able to gain entry into the competition and increase their chances of winning. The wool and knitting equipment needed to start the blankets was sponsored by Wooden Textile.
Lynton Lefevre, ambassador of 67 Blankets, said anyone in the community is welcome to donate handmade, knitted squares or blankets to the school to better their chances in the competition and warm the hearts of those in need. “The sense of community in this school is phenomenal, it’s not only about knitting, this drive gives the children a sense of achievement,” he said.
The school is now on holiday and those who wish to donate and help the school can contact Judith Clarie who is able to pick up the squares or they can be dropped off with her. Her contact number is 011 640 5634.
