St Andrew’s School for Girls’ pupil gives back

JOBURG - Courtney Tomaz, a Grade 12 pupil at St Andrew's School for Girls, goes above and beyond what is expected of the typical schoolgirl by giving back to the community in a variety of ways.

She said, “I wanted to start giving back and realised how important it is to make a positive impact on the community.”

Tomaz first urged members of the public and her family to make contributions to Edenvale Hospital and Orlando Children’s Home by providing new linen, books, toys and toiletries.

“Bedding, cutlery, books and a new toy box were needed by Edenvale Hospital and it was only a pleasure to do what I could to help raise awareness,” added Tomaz.

Another one of her many ways of generously giving back is providing soup every Wednesday evening with her family to more than 15 homeless people who seek shelter most nights near a local shopping centre in Sandringham.

“The smile and gratitude from the people who receive the soup can be felt in the atmosphere,” added the 18-year-old.

Her most recent project involves raising money for a child who sustained second-degree burns, which turned into third-degree burns, and has to undergo skin grafts as a result.

Tomaz said, “We have raised more than R15 000 by just sending out e-mails. We have had a fantastic response, and thank you to everyone who has made such an effort to help.”

The pupil is in the process of founding a non-profit organisation in order to raise money and contribute to the community on a larger scale. “I would like to urge people to get involved. Everyone can assist in more ways than they think and actually make a huge difference in the community.”
