Let’s better our English

SANDRINGHAM - Chevrah Kadisha’s Social Services department is the oldest Jewish organisation in Johannesburg that takes care of the needs of the community.

Chevrah Kadisha has run a volunteer programme for many years which reaches out to primary school children to help them develop their English literacy skills.

There are currently 728 children (380 girls and 348 boys) in the programme assisted by 19 volunteers at a number of schools.

Volunteers at Jeppe Preparatory School recently put together a Cinderella concert with the Grade 4s, and a stage reading of The Owl and the Pussycat with the Grade 3s.

In addition to language development, enhancing reading, vocabulary and comprehension skills, volunteers formed valuable relationships with the children providing love, support and individual attention, which encourage improved development in every sphere, including numeracy, life skills, confidence and self-esteem.

Chevrah Kadisha has consolidated multiple welfare organisations under its umbrella, such as the Sandringham Gardens Hospital, Our Parents Home and assists over 200 tertiary students in need every year.
