Kirsten Smith, the newly-appointed Maryvale College Primary School principal said she was ready and excited to take on the new challenges ahead.
Smith succeeded Elizabeth Redmond who was at the helm for 22 years and retired last year.
“I have big shoes to fill but I have worked so closely with Mrs Redmond. This is my 16th year at Maryvale – I know the school and its ethos,” said Smith.
The support structure has been important for Smith as she begins a new chapter in her 25 years of teaching experience.
“It is exciting and challenging, but I have accepted the challenge… it’s a different phase in my life. What has made it easier is knowing that I have the support of the teachers, parents and my own family, and that has made a big difference,” she said.

When asked what her message was to the parents, Smith said, “I am looking forward to working together with them, and I am honoured and privileged to have been tasked to look after the school. I think if we all work together, we are going to continue to keep Maryvale as a strong force in the education sector.”
Smith said she had always thought that after 10 years as a teacher she would quit but now she had been at it for 25 years.
“I love the fact that every day is different. I love children and the interaction with them. I wake up happy to come to work every day, it’s like my second home,” she said.
In light of last year’s decrease in the matric pass rate percentage, Smith said the standard of education in the county was concerning. “Unfortunately, the new curriculum changes have caused confusion and have a lot of paperwork which takes most teachers’ time. I know there are a lot of good teachers out there, but the big classes in government schools have a negative impact on children,” said Smith.
