The pupils at King David Senior Primary School Linksfield recently explored and celebrated their Jewish heritage through the My Family Story art exhibition held at the school.
The project, hosted in collaboration with Partnership2gether and the Israel Centre South Africa, saw Grade 5 pupils, with the help of their parents, put together their family stories in an artful exhibition as a way to showcase their history.
It was the first year the school, along with two other King David primary schools, took part in the international initiative and in the end, Yaakov Asefovitz and Jessica Hirschowitz were named the winners for their moving artworks displaying their respective family stories.
Asefovitz expressed joy at taking part in the project because it would allow him to leave a legacy for later generations. “I loved doing this project because one day my children can use this project to learn about their great-great-great grandfather,” he said.
The winning artworks, along with those from the other primary schools, will also have the honour of being sent to the Beit Hatfusot museum in Israel and included in an international competition of family roots artworks.
The My Family Story initiative is a journey that connects students to their personal stories, their family stories, and to their story within the greater story of the Jewish people.
