Greenside High School Grade 12 pupil Mahir Ambelal, was recognised for his hard work and determination throughout his high school career.
He was awarded a white honours blazer during school assembly.
The white honours blazer is awarded to the pupil who achieves full colours for sport, academics and culture.
“Since Grade 8, Mahir has shown true cricketing ability with a knowledge and understanding of the game that comes only to a few. His bowling ability often outsmarted his opposition and his intelligent batting held the middle order together,” said Janet Unterslak, a staff member at the school.
She added that Ambelal had also been the cricket captain of his age group since Grade 8, and was awarded the Robinson Bat for Player of the Year and full colours for cricket.
Regarding his culture award, Ambelal achieved senior full colours for United Nations debating based on his excellent contribution to the team from the time he joined UN Debating in Grade 9. In 2015, he was part of the delegation that came fourth in the district debate; and his delegation won the honourable mention certificate in the inter-provincial debate.
In addition to his cultural and sporting contribution, he excels academically, according to Unterslak. “From Grade 8, he has maintained an average of over 80 percent, culminating in a re-award of academic full colours in 2015. Continuing this excellent academic performance, Mahir has a 90 percent average from term one in Grade 12,” she said.
