Jeppe Girls knit blankets for Mandela Day

KENSINGTON – Pupils of Jeppe Girls crotchets for Mandela Day and is rewarded for their charitable donation.

The pupils of Jeppe High School for Girls recently showed their charitable side by making more than 600 blankets for the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative.

The school made the blankets as part of a competition by Saprotex International, which encouraged schools across South Africa to knit and crochet blankets for Mandela Day.

The school won the competition and its donation of blankets contributed towards Saprotex receiving the Guinness World Record for the largest crocheted blanket in April.

Additionally, the school was awarded a cheque of R220 000 as winners of the competition, which was handed over during the school’s assembly on 20 June.

The 67 Blankets initiative is a movement started in 2013 by Carolyn Steyn and aims to knit as many blankets as possible for Nelson Mandela Day, which is commemorated on 18 July.
