More than 3 300 pupils, 550 teachers, 11 schools and six campuses all united in the name of kindness.
Recently, the King David Schools embarked on a kindness campaign playing on the words KD and Kind. The campaign, titled ‘9 days of KD’ness’ was aimed to inspire the pupils to perform acts of kindness, acknowledge each other and use their speech for complimenting and uplifting each other.
The schools’ face brick walls were transformed into ‘name and fame’ walls, where pupils could use their KD’ness notes to thank, compliment and acknowledge each other, parents, teachers and anyone they wanted to pay tribute to.
The campaign quickly spread to the parent body through social media. Tanya Rubin, mother of pupils Abby and Jade, created a whole social media campaign entitled #soupforsomeone. They made soup and sandwiches at home and handed out soup and sandwiches to those less fortunate around the suburb of Norwood and challenged others to do the same.
“I loved seeing the smiles on the faces of the people. I gave the sandwiches [out as well]. It makes you want to do even more,” said Jade, a Grade 3 pupils at King David Junior Primary Linksfield.
Robyn Smooker, initiator of the campaign and head of community development in the Soul Division at King David Schools said, “The ‘9 days of KD’ness’ was one of those rare educational moments whereby we didn’t dictate, prescribe or give grades but, instead, we opened up a space to create the opportunity for the students to step forward, step up and make a difference of their own will.
“We witnessed unprecedented acts of kindness, sensitivity, acknowledging, giving and sharing. We saw how parents and teachers and staff all got involved. We witnessed a King David family which includes well over 6 000 people, but who all share one heart.”
