For the fifth consecutive year, King Edward VII School (KES) was placed as the top school in Gauteng in the National Accounting Olympiad presented by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica).
Sage Pastel, a company which specialises in accounting and business management software development, once again sponsored the prize of two desktop computers and accounting software for the winners.
The school’s accounting teachers Shanta Naidoo, Shaun Sutherland and Cathy Avidon (head of accountancy) were also rewarded with a cheque for R2 000 each.
Pupil, Byron Christou was named the national winner of the Olympiad, and he earned a laptop and R2 000 for his achievement, in addition to winning two desktop computers for his school and R2 000 for his teacher.

Christou said, “I am proud of myself and the work I put in to get this far. The Saica National Accounting Olympiad with Sage One allowed me the opportunity to challenge myself and prove my worth in the field of accounting. Congratulations to all the other schools and students who participated this year.”
The Olympiad recognises youthful accounting talent and nurtures an interest in accounting as a profession among young South Africans. It attracts entries from South Africa’s top high-school accounting pupils.
This year’s Olympiad attracted 4 738 Grade 11 and 12 pupils from 373 schools from around the country, with cash prizes for the winners, runners-up and top teachers in each province.

Ryan Quigley of KES also did the school proud by achieving 95 per cent for the Olympiad and was placed first runner-up in Gauteng. He was awarded a cheque of R1 000.
Gugu Makhanya, Saica’s senior executive Nation Building, said, “Our goal with the Olympiad is to support the transformation and growth of the chartered accounting profession in South Africa by sparking an interest in accountancy as a subject at school level.
“The Olympiad draws the link between accounting at school and a possible career in an accounting or business field.”
The Grade 12 KES pupils who took part in the Saica Olympiad were, Sameer Aithma, Benjamin Austen, Jonah Austen, Christou, Yuveshin Govender, Keaton Jacobs, Yusuf Jassat, Marc Jutte, Sicelo Mazibuko, Hasan Munshi, Mufhumudzi Muthivhi, Daiyan Parker, Quigley, Tyron Ruthel and Jonty Sass.

Avidon, along with her department teachers Naidoo and Sutherland congratulated the pupils on this fantastic achievement.
