Every morning from 05:00 until 08:00, the church serves hot, homemade soup to those who need it most. This early morning initiative is a lifeline for many, providing a warm meal to start the day, and ensuring that no one goes without food. The dedication of the volunteers who rise early to serve their neighbours reflects the strong sense of community that defines St Columba’s.
St Columba’s hosted its first Slice and Dice Project of the year on February 25. The event saw volunteers come together to prepare homemade soup, chop vegetables, and share stories – all in the name of a good cause. The event was a resounding success, with an impressive 30 litres of soup produced during the latest session.

The Slice and Dice initiative is held every two weeks, turning the church hall into a bustling hub of activity as volunteers work side by side to prepare the meals. At the heart of the kitchen is Donné Duffy, whose dedication ensures the smooth running of the project. With her leadership, humble ingredients are transformed into nourishing meals for those in need.
Recognising the growing demand for support, the church has expanded its efforts with the launch of the Home Soup Makers Project. This initiative encourages residents to prepare soup in their kitchens and drop it off at the church, allowing more people to contribute to the cause from the comfort of their homes. The project serves as a reminder that no act of kindness is too small, and every contribution helps.
The success of the soup kitchen relies on the ongoing support of the community. St Columba’s is calling on locals to lend a hand, whether it’s through volunteering at the next Slice and Dice session, donating fresh produce and ingredients, or offering financial support. Every effort counts in the fight against hunger, and the church’s initiatives are making a tangible impact on the lives of many.
