Astro dreams take shape as Pirates Club launches new turf and partnership with Blairgowrie Primary School in style

The Pirates Club in Greenside was a hive of excitement on May 10, as the club proudly unveiled its brand-new AstroTurf – a state-of-the-art surface that promises to elevate hockey for years to come.
The unveiling marks the culmination of a remarkable collaboration between the club and Blairgowrie Primary School, which contributed a generous R2m towards the development of the facility.

In return for their investment, Blairgowrie Primary has secured a 10-year partnership with Pirates Club, granting its learners access to the AstroTurf and other club amenities. The agreement, which was approved at an AGM meeting in 2024, was backed by enthusiastic parents eager to see their school gain long-term access to high-quality sports infrastructure.

The launch day kicked off with friendly matches between Pirates Junior Hockey teams and Blairgowrie Primary learners. The younger players were buzzing with excitement as they got their first taste of competitive action on a top-tier surface. For many, it marked the beginning of a new era, one in which home games and proper turf training would become the norm rather than the exception.

The unveiling drew a large crowd of parents, players, coaches, and supporters, all eager to see the new facility in action, with matches, music and a lively atmosphere. The day was a celebration of community spirit and a shared commitment to growing the sport.
