Open excavation a danger at Observatory intersection

A large hole at the corner of Urania Street and Steyn Street has been left exposed, posing a risk to both motorists and pedestrians.

An excavation, believed to be linked to pipe burst repairs, has been left open at the corner of Urania Street and Steyn Street in Observatory. The area is cordoned off with caution tape, but the hole remains a potential hazard for anyone using the road.

The hole is situated directly on the corner, making it difficult for both motorists and pedestrians to navigate the space safely. Pedestrians are urged to avoid walking close to the site, while motorists are advised to slow down when approaching the corner. The danger is especially present at night, when visibility is reduced.

It appears that Johannesburg Water (JW) has carried out work on a pipe burst at the site but have not yet completed the reinstatement of the road surface. Until this is done, the excavation remains a risk for road users.

JW has been contacted for comment, and this story will be updated once a response is received.
