Johannesburg Water has not forgotten the Jan Smuts Ave excavation

Johannesburg Water confirmed it was aware of the dangerous excavation on Jan Smuts Avenue, and that it was in talks with JRA to repair the storm water drain holding up the backfilling.

Confirming to the publication, on November 4, Johannesburg Water said that the dangerous, more than three-month-old, excavation on Jan Smuts Avenue in Craighall has not been forgotten.

Johannesburg Water’s spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said: “The reason the excavation is still open is because there is a damaged storm water pipe. Johannesburg Water has informed Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) about the repairs needed.”

The deep excavation is not only filled with litter; it is exposing a broken cement pipe and newly installed blue pipes, making damage to these exposed pipes a real risk.

The publication will reach out to JRA. An update to the article, with their response, will be published as soon as it is received.
