United registers 5th win in straight row
ALEXANDRA - Alex United continued on their winning streak, beating Soweto Panthers 2-1 in an exciting game at the Alexandra Stadium.
Alex United came out victorious in the battle of the townships when they hosted rivals Soweto Panthers at the Alexandra Stadium on 28 January.
Coming from four straight wins in a row, United were in a mean mood and oozing with confidence which showed in the way they played. They beat Panthers 2-1 in one of their most scintillating games of the season.
The first half belonged to United as they controlled the ball well and played brilliant one-twos among themselves. United was rewarded for their efforts in the 33rd minute after some exciting play when Gavin Abrahams scored a fantastic goal with a well-taken shot just outside the big box. This was Abrahams’ second goal in two matches. He scored last week against AmaBEE.
The first 45 minutes ended with United leading 1-0, but with the second half barely underway Kgatlego ‘Skates’ Mbatha netted for United with another excellent shot. With only 20 minutes to go, United conceded a soft goal that could have swung the match around, had Panthers been inspired by their goal.
The win ensured that United’s beaten record at home was maintained and further stretched its lead on top of the Safa Second Division log to 22 points from nine games, five points clear of its nearest rival, Highlands Park who are stuck on 17 points from the same number of games.
Highlands Park lost to M-Tigers 3-2; while Trabzon lost 1-2 to African All Stars.
On 31 January, United host FC Kathorus at home at the Alexandra Stadium and kick-off is scheduled for 7pm.
