Dusi not for sissies
ROSEBANK - Hundreds of adrenalin junkies throughout South Africa will be signing up for the next Dusi determined to learn to paddle and master this challenge. Less than a tenth will actually manage to get there.
However, less than a tenth of participants will actually get there.
Considered an elite, exclusive, and even an extreme sport, mastering river canoeing to the skill levels needed to endure the Dusi takes an enormous commitment of time, resources, effort and exhausting training, which few can accomplish in a year.
Rosebank resident Jason Lemmer finished his first Dusi with his paddling partner in 13 hours and 33 minutes in 467th position. He enjoyed every minute of the exciting challenge, thriving on the difficult portages having completed Ironman, Comrades and the ORT Robben Island Swim during last year.
Adrian Diamond and Lemmer successfully managed to finish the three days of tough canoeing with their respective partners, and have ticked the Dusi off their bucket list of challenges.
Two golf buddies agreed to take on the challenge a year ago and after months of high intensity training, freezing cold winter mornings on the river, road running and gym work, as well as hours spent on rivers learning the ropes of how to shoot rapids, handle currents, and manoeuvre and control a thin fiberglass boat in very rough water.
The race took place from 13 to 15 February.
