New paddlers get river proficient
Paddlers look forward to Fish River canoe marathon.
The Hansa Fish Canoe Marathon takes place annually in Cradock in the Eastern Cape in October.
With only three months to go, learner river paddlers are desperate to obtain their river proficiency and complete the required qualifying races to participate at this major A Grade river marathon.
Deon Vermaak and Patrick Meyer from Rosebank and Killarney were pleased to finish the 30km race hosted by Florida Lake Canoe Club from Daleside to Meyerton on the Klip River.
Braving the icy Gauteng winter, Vermaak and Meyer prepared for the Hansa Fish in waters filled with numerous weirs, broken bridges and raging rapids.
The pair completed the long training race in 03:06:00 and are happily ticking off their qualifying points and experience ratings.
