Old Eds Sportsman of the year

JOBURG - The Kings Tavern at the Old Edwardian Society was packed for the annual Sportsman of the Year awards evening.

Cricket’s Stephen Cook was honoured as the winner.

Mike Dunk was the master of ceremonies for the evening and he mentioned the highlights of the past year especially the “re-launch” of the boat club.

This section dominated the function for seven consecutive years from 1999 when Donovan Cech and Ramon de Clementi won the trophy. Before that, another rower, Michael Hasslebach, won it for two consecutive years.

He also mentioned the re-birth of mini hockey which in the 80’s was the catalyst for future provincial and national players.

Stephen Cook was named as the 2014 Sportsman of the Year for his performances with The Lions, as well as for being made the captain of the South African Invitational team that played against India and Australia last year.

There were joint runners up in Gus Pinker and Dion Willis for officiating at world water polo events.

The President, Tutty Faber, presented the awards. Other winners included Faye Keighley in swimming and Cameron Peterson in tennis for best female and male junior respectively. The best schoolboy playing sport for the society went to Grant Roelofsen in cricket, and best performance by a senior went to Linda Icely for athletics.

The team award was given to the first cricket team, while Tim Johnston received the sportsmanship award and sub club of the year went to water polo.

The chairman’s award was given to Kevin Webber.
