UPDATE: Rolex gang allegedly involved in armed robbery

Police have confirmed that the man who was shot and critically injured during a shootout with four suspects on Rivonia Road in Sandton on the afternoon of 23 July has died.

The charges against the four suspects, who are still at large, are now murder and armed robbery.

Update: 23 July, 4pm:

Provincial police spokesperson Katlego Mogale said, “A man in his 50s was shot and injured in Sandton after his wife was robbed. It is alleged that the victim was parking his vehicle at a rental company when he was approached by four suspects, two of whom were armed.”

Mogale added when the victim realised they were armed, he shot at them. They fired back, injuring him and leaving him in a critical condition. “Before fleeing the scene, the suspects stole the woman’s watch. A case of attempted murder and armed robbery has been opened.”

While it is thought by some on the scene that members of the notorious Rolex gang were involved in the armed robbery, police could not confirm this.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann confirmed that Netcare and other emergency services, as well as the provincial police, arrived at the scene to find a man in critical condition who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Steinmann said the man was treated and then rushed to the nearest hospital.

Steinmann added, “The provincial police are currently investigating the situation.”

23 July, 3.12pm: 

It is alleged the notorious Rolex gang was involved in an armed robbery of a jewellery store on Rivonia Road on 23 July.

Andre Snyman, Eblockwatch founder, posted a video of the alleged crime scene and can be heard speaking to someone who said the Rolex gang was involved in the robbery. A red BMW is also seen in the video and was allegedly used in the crime.

It is claimed the incident took place on Rivonia Road close to the intersection of West Street.

It is further alleged that someone was shot, but this could not be confirmed.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for the Sandton police, confirmed that an incident took place on Rivonia Road in Sandton. He could not confirm if it was, indeed, the robbery of a jewellery store.

Communication on the case has been referred to provincial police for further comment.

Earlier on 23 July, a Mercedes was allegedly hijacked by four armed suspects driving a red BMW on Rivonia Road. It is unclear at this stage if these incidents are linked, or if it is the same BMW.
