Emma Murphy hopes to shine bright in Scotland
Local-based lawn bowls SportStar looks forward to being the best in the world while representing South Africa.
Emma Murphy’s passion for lawn bowls began when she was nine years old, and it has grown rapidly since then.
According to the 24-year-old, she has been playing competitively for five years and has recently been chosen to represent South Africa in a U25 event in Scotland – a fantastic achievement that made her parents, team, and Morningside Country Club proud.
“I have always wanted to represent SA at the Commonwealth Games and pursuing that goal has always encouraged me to keep going and never give up.”
Murphy said her mom played the sport, and her coming to the club when she was younger drew her closer to the lawn bowls, and love sparks started.

“I used to roll the jack up and down next to the green but eventually got bored, so I convinced my mom to let me try. The bug bit, and the rest was history. Also in high school, I played other sports, but in varsity, I looked for something else to try, so I gave bowling a go again.”
Murphy added that bowls have always been considered an old-person game, and that has been one of the challenges she has been facing and also being overlooked because some think she is too young to be playing at a high level.
“Besides bowls, I love action netball and riding motorbikes with my dad, and once I am no longer as competitive, I want to give back to the sport and help the next generation of bowlers.”
She concluded by saying that she looks forward to representing South Africa in the U25 event in Scotland and hopes to outshine everyone.
