South African AI Awards set to spotlight innovation in 2026

The countdown to the 2026 South African AI Awards is on.

South Africa’s fast-growing artificial intelligence (AI) sector is gearing up for a major moment next year as the South African AI Awards prepare to open nominations for their 2026 edition.

The awards are positioning themselves as a flagship platform that recognises the people, companies, and institutions shaping the country’s digital future.

The black-tie gala, scheduled for November 2026 in Johannesburg, is expected to draw more than 500 leaders from business, government, academia, and the wider tech community.

Its focus is clear: celebrate work that shows how AI is being used to solve real problems, expand opportunities, and push South Africa’s innovation capacity forward.

The programme will cover a broad spectrum of achievements across business, technology, research, and social impact.

Categories include AI Startup of the Year, Research and Innovation, AI in Business Transformation, and AI for Social Good, alongside sector-specific honours in healthcare, education, finance, and agriculture.

Emerging talent, women in leadership, and the AI Personality of the Year will also be recognised.

Entries will open in early 2026, with nominations open to individuals, companies, and institutions based or operating in South Africa.

Both self-nominations and third-party submissions will be accepted through an online portal.

An independent judging panel drawn from academia, industry, and the public sector will assess entries using criteria such as originality, measurable results, scalability, inclusivity, and ethical standards.

Finalists are expected to be announced in October, ahead of the gala evening in November.

The organisers said the event aims to do more than hand out trophies.

By bringing decision-makers, researchers, and entrepreneurs into one room, they hope to strengthen collaboration within the country’s AI ecosystem and encourage responsible, sustainable innovation.

The theme for the coming year, Recognising the Power of AI to Build an Intelligent Future, signals a deliberate focus on the role of technology in serving people and communities.

It places ethical practice and inclusive progress at the centre of the initiative rather than treating AI as a purely technical pursuit.

Partnerships for the 2026 edition are already open, with brands invited to align themselves with a platform expected to draw national media coverage and year-round engagement. A multi-platform media rollout will profile nominees, highlight expert insights, and offer behind-the-scenes coverage leading up to the event.

The gala itself will include a red-carpet reception, keynote addresses from industry leaders, fine dining, and live entertainment. Attendees will range from policymakers and investors to young innovators who are helping to define South Africa’s role in global AI dialogue.

Organisers said the awards will use the coming year not only to recognise excellence but also to inspire continued investment in AI-driven solutions that support a smarter and more inclusive future.
