Two Sandton SPCA vehicles repaired, rescues across Sandton back on track
A Nissan P200 and Hyundai H100 are now fully operational after extensive repairs, restoring the SPCA’s ability to respond to emergencies across 176 suburbs.
The Sandton SPCA has received a much-needed boost in its fight against animal cruelty, thanks to the support of local businesses, residents, and community leaders.
Two of the organisation’s critically important inspection vehicles have been fully repaired, ensuring that their dedicated team can continue rescuing and protecting animals across 176 suburbs.
Sandton SPCA general manager Stephen Maila explained the significance of the vehicles. “Our current fleet includes vehicles that are as old as 16 years, and some of them were donated as second-hand. They are on the road every day, responding to reports of cruelty, neglect, and emergencies.

“The maintenance costs are high, and breakdowns can disrupt our work. Thanks to the generosity of the community and EcoTabs, two of our vehicles are now fully operational and reliable for at least another 20 000km.”
The repairs were made possible through the collaboration of EcoTabs, a bioremediation company, which assessed and undertook full repairs of the vehicles at their own expense.
The first vehicle, a Nissan P200, underwent extensive repairs, including replacement of wheel bearings, cam and fan belts, water pipes, brakes, headlights, lock mechanisms, and a full engine service.
The second vehicle, a Hyundai H100, was also fully serviced with new braking components, light fittings, and a complete engine overhaul. Three additional vehicles are awaiting assessment and repair, with details to be shared for future fundraising efforts.

Ward 109 councillor Lori Coogan, who has been involved in various SPCA initiatives, including the one for the repair of cars, praised the community’s response.

“A long-standing commitment to animal welfare, rooted in caring for those who cannot speak for themselves, has guided our efforts.
“Residents and local businesses have consistently supported initiatives such as Mandela Day drives, Heritage Day donations, and various conservation and rescue efforts. This latest collaboration with the SPCA highlights what we can achieve when the community comes together to protect vulnerable animals.”
The partnership between Sandton SPCA, residents, and businesses is particularly important given the SPCA’s funding challenges.
In January 2025, the organisation had to reach out to the ward councillor Coogan after their annual City of Johannesburg grants, essential for acting as pounds for abandoned and abused animals, were delayed.
With support from Coogan and persistent follow-ups, the grants were eventually paid, covering just 20% of operational costs.
Maila emphasised the ongoing need for support. “While repairs keep our vehicles running for now, our long-term goal is to replace the ageing fleet entirely. New vehicles would allow us to focus on rescuing animals rather than constantly managing breakdowns.
“We welcome contributions towards maintaining our current vehicles or towards acquiring new ones. Every bit helps us continue saving lives.”
