Fidelity Services Group offers safety resolutions for 2026

As the new year approaches, security experts encourage South Africans to make safety a priority in 2026.

As South Africans prepare to welcome 2026, security experts are encouraging households, businesses, and communities to include safety-focused resolutions in their New Year plans.

December is traditionally a time to slow down and reflect, but it also presents an opportunity to reassess daily habits and identify ways to live more securely in the year ahead.

According to Fidelity Services Group, small, consistent actions can significantly improve personal safety and peace of mind. “This is the perfect time to look at everyday routines and include steps that make your life more secure,” said Charnel Hattingh, group head of marketing and communications at Fidelity Services Group.

She said safety should form part of how we plan for the new year, just like health or financial goals.

Hattingh highlights several practical measures that families and individuals can adopt. These include joining community, or suburb, WhatsApp groups to stay informed about local incidents, getting to know neighbours to strengthen community vigilance, and investing in outdoor security, such as electric fencing, CCTV cameras, outdoor beams, and sensor lighting.

She also emphasises the importance of awareness and preparation. Families are encouraged to discuss safety habits at home, ensure everyone knows how to contact emergency services, and consider having a professional security assessment done to identify vulnerabilities. “Learning basic self-defence, practising safe driving, and creating an emergency plan with evacuation routes and meeting points can further improve readiness.”

Physical fitness and responsible online behaviour also play a role.

Regular exercise can improve response in emergencies, while limiting the sharing of personal information on social media can reduce privacy and identity theft risks. “Starting the year on a safe slate means actively choosing to protect yourself and those around you. These are the kinds of resolutions that offer lasting peace of mind.”
