Michael Mount U19 basketball team triumphs at St John’s tournament

A dramatic comeback, relentless training, and a strong team culture helped Michael Mount Waldorf School’s U19 basketball team secure one of the biggest school basketball titles in southern Africa.

The U19 boys from Michael Mount Waldorf School in Bryanston celebrated a major sporting achievement recently, winning the prestigious St John’s Basketball Tournament.

Head coach Igor Lunnemann described the victory as a reward for the players’ dedication and determination throughout the season. “For me, and the team, it’s a really big tournament. It just feels good to see that all the work we have put in is actually doing something.

”He explained that the team’s road to victory was not easy. After a slow start to the season at another tournament, the coaching staff increased the intensity of training sessions to prepare the players mentally and physically. “We made our training sessions tougher than any game they could play. Everyone bought into the system and trusted the process.”

He elaborated that one of the most memorable moments came in the semi-final clash against King Edward VII School, when Michael Mount staged an impressive comeback after trailing by 18 points. “Our boys never dropped their heads. They just focused on one possession at a time and trusted each other.”

The team also faced challenges during the tournament, including key players picking up fouls early in several matches. However, adjustments to the team’s strategy helped them turn things around.

Beyond the trophy, Lunnemann hopes the experience will shape the players’ approach to life. “Basketball teaches more than just sport. The biggest lesson is that hard work works. If you put in the effort and stay disciplined, you can achieve anything.”
