Students rally behind small animal NGO with hands-on support

Parents and community members can contribute by donating new or gently used pet items or by making financial contributions directly to the NGO.

The Domestic Animal Interact Board, part of Crawford Sandton College’s Interact community service structure, is shifting the spotlight to smaller animal welfare organisations that are often overlooked in favour of larger, established charities.

Over the past month, learners have been creating handmade cat toys and beds for Bagel & Friends, a foster-based initiative founded by a veterinary student at Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute. The NGO rehabilitates abandoned and vulnerable kittens, many of whom require medical treatment or surgery before being rehomed.

Chairperson Aqua Indiana Douglas Pedersen said the decision to support Bagel & Friends was intentional. “We often support larger organisations, which absolutely deserve help. But this year, we wanted to focus on smaller NGOs that don’t always receive consistent donations. Bagel & Friends is run by students who don’t have financial backing or steady funding. That’s what made it such a worthy cause,” she said.

Vice-chair Avir Pershad said the board typically hosted between 14 and 18 learners per session, depending on the needs of the organisation and the capacity of the four-member leadership team overseeing activities. One recent initiative had learners create rattle toys from recycled materials and beans. The project aligned with the school’s environmental focus while keeping participation accessible.

“Using recycled materials makes it easier for students to contribute. Most of the items are things people already have at home. It also supports our eco-focused initiatives at school,” said Aqua. She added that beyond toys, learners have also made cat beds to support foster homes. Many of the kittens are cared for by veterinary students in their residences, where space and resources are limited.

“Because the kittens are often recovering from surgery or trauma, they need their own beds and separate areas. The students also have to fund surgeries themselves, which is why donations are so important,” Aqua said. While learners earn community service hours, both leaders said the impact went deeper.

“Yes, some students initially join for the hours. But once they start helping, they realise it’s more than that. It’s about understanding that your skills and opportunities can make a real difference.”

Avir added that animals often depended entirely on human advocacy. “Animals can’t tell you what they are feeling. They rely on people to speak on their behalf and raise awareness. That’s something we take seriously.”

Donations remain open until mid-April for the Bagel & Friends. Needed items include cat litter, kitten milk, wet and dry food, pet carriers, litter boxes, harnesses, beds, and small- to medium-sized puppy food. Monetary donations are also encouraged to assist with veterinary costs.
