Five ways to survive Sandton traffic

SANDTON - Whether motorists use William Nicol Drive, Republic Road or Jan Smuts Avenue, 5pm traffic from the Sandton area has proven time and time again to frustrate commuters.

“One of the most dangerous issues on Johannesburg’s roads is road rage,” said spokesperson of the Metro police, Wayne Minaar.

“We always advise motorists to drive with courtesy and patience because breaking the rules of the road will lead to offending other motorists. Not following the basics of driving can lead to road rage and accidents on the road.”

The Sandton Chronicle has compiled five tips for surviving Sandton traffic.

Listen to the radio

One of the best ways to avoid stress while in bumper-to-bumper traffic is listening to music or the radio. Whether singing to one of your favourite songs or listening to DJ banter, your stress will be reduced.

Start a carpool

Commuting from work in silence can drive anyone crazy, so starting a carpool with people you find vaguely interesting at work could definitely add a fun atmosphere in your vehicle.

Pick up your children earlier

There are many issues on Sandton roads that could cause traffic jams to last longer than they should; one of them is the school run. Picking up your children from school before the end of the work day, or organising for someone to pick them up for you, could help alleviate stress.

Discover Johannesburg

Relaxation techniques

Finding a good relaxation technique like massaging pressure points could definitely relieve the stress from traffic. But try to keep touching your face to a minimum – it could lead to strange looks on the road!
