Affordable housing prospects are on the horizon as the City of Johannesburg, in conjunction with the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco), broke ground on the Rivonia Social Housing Development Project today (14 April).
The social housing project is set to make 1 077 units available to households with a gross income between R2 500 and R15 000.

MMC for Housing, councillor Mlungisi Mabaso hopes that the project will help alleviate some pressure on the current housing backlog.

According to the City of Johannesburg, this is one of its turnkey projects that the City has invested over a billion towards.
“The development responds to the need for affordable, decent housing around Midrand, Fourways and the surrounding areas in line with the City’s housing policy of breaking new ground,” said the City in a statement.
The Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco) is strategically starting these economic hubs and suburban areas as it expects to yield significant cost and time reduction for the lower-income-earning residents in the peripheries travelling around 25km on average to their place of work.
