World War Pothole on Parkmore’s 13th Streets

Parkmore residents lament the existence of a water leak which seems to be re-opening recently fixed potholes.

Parkmore residents are disgruntled over a water leak on 13th Street at the intersection with Olympia Avenue.

According to resident Roz Brook, the potholes in the area had been fixed by Discovery’s Pothole Patrol two weeks ago – only to allegedly re-appear because of the water leak. According to Brook, water flows down the street all the time.

“The real problem is that there has been a water leak on the corner of 13th Street for months now that has not been fixed,” said Brook. “Four days after they fixed the potholes, they were all open again even worse than before. You have to wait to drive on the other side of the road where there is also a hole. I reported the water leak on August 11, but nothing has been done.”

Parkmore Community Association suburb manager, Lori Klein, likened the scene to a warzone, supplying pictures which corroborated the likeness.

“This situation is causing many problems, for example, damage to vehicles, and emergency braking when a driver sees the potholes at the last minute,” said Klein.

“Pothole Patrol has come twice to repair the potholes, but it’s of no use when the water keeps running down the road – the potholes open quickly with water. Driving on the left side of the road going north down Coleraine has become impossible at this intersection of Olympia Avenue and 13th Street in Parkmore.”

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said if running water was the issue, then the potholes would show up again.

“The issue is due to a burst pipe which Joburg Water has confirmed they will attend to,” said Peter-Scheepers. “Once finalised, JRA will repair the road.”

Johannesburg Water was contacted on August 17 regarding the water leak.

“I have forwarded your query to the relevant depot,” Joburg Water external communication officer Nolwazi Dhlamini said in acknowledgement of the query on August 18. “Please note it can take over 48 hours to get feedback.”

No further feedback was received from Johannesburg Water at the time of going to print.
