KnitWits 4 the Needy celebrates a decade of warmth and compassion

Celebrating 10 years of heartfelt service, KnitWits 4 the Needy gathered for a high tea to mark a decade of creating blankets and spreading kindness, stitch by stitch, for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.

The Rosebank Union Church was abuzz with warmth and laughter, a stark contrast to the cold weather outside, as KnitWits 4 the Needy gathered to celebrate 10 years of knitting and crocheting for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.

The joyful occasion was marked with a delightful high tea, where members shared stories, sipped tea, and, of course, continued their tireless work of creating blankets for those in need.

KnitWits 4 the Needy founder and 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day ambassador Greta Collier reflected on the journey, sharing a personal tragedy that ignited the group’s formation. Having experienced a stroke which impacted her balance, eyesight, and hearing, she found herself at a crossroads. “I sat at home on my couch and wondered what God had in store for me. The answer came in an inspired thought. That I could possibly pick up some needles and wool – which I did. I found that I could knit by feel, and at the same time help those in need.”

Collier emphasised the ongoing need for their work. “As much as we have donated many 100s of blankets, we still need to persevere as the needy community is evolving hugely, giving us such drive and passion for making blankets for them.”

She spoke of the immense satisfaction derived from their contributions. “Every time we donate blankets, we are immensely thrilled to know how we have helped, in a small way, with some warmth and love.”

Collier added that the passion is fuelled by the inspiration of Carolyn Steyn, the founder of 67 Blankets. She also highlighted the exciting projects encouraged by 67 Blankets, including the creation of a portrait blanket. “This year, the group is contributing to a humongous portrait blanket of Carolyn Steyn’s late husband, Douw Steyn, which will be displayed at Steyn City on February 4, the anniversary of his passing, before being separated and donated to the poor.”

Beyond blankets, KnitWits 4 the Needy also spreads festive cheer by creating Christmas trees, adorned with donated teddies or beanies each year. Collier’s vision for the future is centred on teamwork and continued growth, expressing gratitude for their wool sponsor, Cummins SA, which enables their perseverance.

The impact of KnitWits 4 the Needy extends to its dedicated members, like Joe Corlett, based at Rosebank Union Church. Corlett’s involvement began in 2018 when she met Collier at Zonderwater Correctional Prison during the launch of the impressive Nelson Mandela blanket. Since then, she has personally contributed over 350 blankets. “All of them have gone to needy people, and it is so gratifying to be involved with this movement. Looking at all these incredible people, crocheting with one thing in mind, and that’s to help the needy and the underprivileged.”

Another valued member, Noreen van Rooyen, said she found solace and purpose with the group, after being retrenched. “I just love it with all the people. All the ladies and their stories. I just enjoy their time.

“Crocheting gives me time to relax, and I enjoy giving back, particularly in making items for baby boxes and beanies. I really enjoy it.”
