City of Johannesburg EMS urges fire safety vigilance ahead of cold front

As Johannesburg braces for colder weather, the city’s emergency management services warns residents to stay vigilant against fire hazards, especially in vulnerable communities.

With the arrival of a cold front across Johannesburg, the city’s emergency management services (EMS) has issued an urgent appeal for residents to exercise heightened caution to prevent fire incidents.

The colder temperatures have led to increased use of heating devices, candles, and open flames, which can pose significant fire risks if not managed carefully.

EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo emphasised the importance of fire safety during this period. “We are seeing a rise in fire-related emergencies, particularly in informal settlements and high-density housing. It’s crucial that residents follow simple safety precautions to protect their families and properties.”

Khumalo shared key safety reminders to help residents prevent fires:

  • Never leave open flames or heating devices unattended. Always switch them off when leaving a room.
  • Keep flammable items, such as clothing, paper, liquids, and furniture, well away from heaters or open flames.
  • Avoid plugging multiple devices into a single outlet or using damaged electrical cords, which can cause overheating.
  • Use only heating equipment that has been tested and approved for safety.
  • In case of a fire, call emergency services immediately at (011) 375 5911.
