No new developments in Olorato Mongale murder case as police continue investigation

The search for Olorato Mongale's killers continues, with police actively investigating but yet to release any fresh information.

There have been no updates in the case of Olorato Mongale, the 30-year-old woman who was brutally murdered.

Mongale’s body was found on May 25 in Lombardy West, after she went on a date with her alleged killer, known only as John.

According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding her death but have yet to make any breakthroughs or release new information.

Background and case timeline

  • May 25: Olorato Mongale was picked up from her residential complex in Athol, Johannesburg, by a man driving a white VW Polo with a cloned number plate (LT57JGGP). She was allegedly taken through Alexandra and Kew before her murder. Her body was later found on May 25 in Lombardy West, and her phone and handbag were recovered nearby in Kew.
  • May 29: Police located the white VW Polo at a panel beater in Phoenix, Durban. Blood traces were found inside the vehicle, and the elderly owner was arrested. The search expanded to include three suspects: Fezile Ngubane, Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya, and Bongani Mthimkhulu, believed to have played roles in her murder.
  • May 29: The parents of one suspect, who is on the run, were detained after police believed they tipped off their son about the investigation. The father, owner of the VW Polo, and the mother were taken into custody but later released.
  • May 30: The main suspect, Makhanya, was located in Amanzimtoti, KZN, where he allegedly shot at police upon their arrival. Police returned fire, fatally wounding him.
  • May 31: Police announced that an investigation had cleared Ngubane as a suspect in the case. Ngubane washes cars for a living and was targeted by Makhanya, who used Ngubane’s ID and SIM cards to communicate with women. Ngubane was later released.

Mongale was laid to rest at her family home in Bloemfontein on June 1. Her family and community members continue to mourn her loss, and many are anxiously awaiting justice.
