Young karateka triumphs with two bronze medals in her first competition

Ishta Rama's karate journey began as a trial in January 2023, but it quickly evolved into a profound love for the discipline, with two bronze medals to show for it.

Twelve-year-old Ishta Rama, from Crawford International Sandton, has taken the karate world by storm, winning two bronze medals in her very first competition at the Gauteng Provincial Karate Tournament.

In January 2023, Ishta embarked on her karate journey, encouraged by her father to join a class with her brother. What started as just a trial run quickly blossomed into a profound love for the art.

“I wasn’t sure it would be something I’d like, but I decided to give it a try. To my surprise, I ended up loving it,” Ishta said. “What started as an experiment turned into a passion. I remember the excitement I felt when I first tied the white belt around my waist, eager to see where this new adventure would take me.”

Karate has become much more than a sport for Ishta; it is a means of personal growth. “Karate isn’t just about punches and kicks. It’s about discipline, and respect. It’s teaching me that falling is not failing, but an opportunity to rise stronger.”

Leading up to the Gauteng Provincial Karate Tournament, Ishta dedicated herself to rigorous preparation. “I prepared by going to extra training at the dojo and practicing at home.”

Despite her commitment, the tournament was an entirely new experience for her, complete with nerves from competing in front of an audience and judges. “My opponents were very skilled, and it was a bit daunting,” Ishta added.

However, her hard work and determination paid off, resulting in a feeling of immense pride, as she won not one, but two bronze medals. “It wasn’t just about the medals themselves, but also the hours of practice and the support from my sensei and family. I felt motivated to continue improving and striving for greater achievements.”

She considers this journey a remarkable adventure that she would have missed had she never stepped into the dojo. “Don’t be afraid to explore. Try that instrument, join that club, or learn that dance. You might surprise yourself,” she encourages other young people contemplating new experiences.

Throughout her karate venture, Ishta has found tremendous support from her sensei, Dawie Grobbelaar, who has helped push her beyond her limits.

She likens her experiences to practicing katas, the precise movements that tell a story in karate. “Life too has its katas. We face challenges. Each day is a chance to perform our best kata. Sometimes we stumble, but we adjust and keep moving forward,” she muses.

Looking ahead, Ishta has ambitious goals. “My goal is to deepen my understanding of the techniques and principles while focusing on precision and control.”

She also aspires to build physical strength and endurance to elevate her skills further, alongside developing greater mental discipline.

Outside the dojo, Ishta said she is a passionate reader, and she enjoys swimming and watching competitive shows and sports.

Ishta shared valuable advice for anyone considering taking up karate. “Karate isn’t just about physical strength; it’s about respect for others and for ourselves.

“It’s about standing tall, even when life throws a kick our way. Let us carry the spirit of karate beyond the dojo. Let’s be kind, courageous, and always ready to learn.”
