Seven points to check when choosing an energy back-up system supplier

Make sure to work through this checklist before you choose your energy supplier.

Before you rush out and get the cheapest company to install your back-up energy system, make sure to do your homework and check that the service provider you choose ticks all the right boxes and can supply the right product for your needs. Dialdirect and Solar Craft suggest looking out for the following points before you make your decision:

  1. Longevity: How long have they been in business? How many successful installations have they done? How well will the business be able to provide after sales support in 5 years’ time?
  2. Reputation: What do the reviews say? With a little Google research, you’ll be able to get a fair idea of the feedback from their existing or previous clients.
  3. Qualified: Do their installations adhere to SANS and NERSA requirements? Is the installation done by qualified and registered electricians? Does an electrical engineer check the quality of components and installations?
  4. Product: Is their product 100% suited to your needs? It’s better to get a system that is slightly bigger than what you need, as pressure on the system will be lower, limiting the risk of problems. All standard protection mechanisms should be included, and components should be installed in a suitable space to ensure optimal running temperature and minimal exposure to dust and water.
  5. Certified: Do you receive a Certificate of Compliance (COC) after the installation?
  6. Safety: If you are opting for an inverter, make sure it has a monitoring system that will alert you when something is amiss, so that it can be fixed immediately.
  7. Insurance: Freestanding systems can be specified under all risk insurance, or it can be covered under home contents (if it’s not located outside). Systems permanently connected to a building will be covered under buildings insurance, but the insured value of the building must be adjusted accordingly.
