Sandton director over the moon after SAFTA win

Ricardo Ricwa Klassen, a name now etched in the annals of South African television history, is on a high after winning the prestigious Best Achievement in Directing award at this year’s South African Television and Film Awards (SAFTAs).
His work on the beloved SABC 1 soap Skeem Saam has garnered widespread recognition, making him one of the industry’s most exciting talents.

Speaking from his base in Sandton, where he has built his career over the years, Klassen shared his feelings and thoughts on what this recognition means to him and what lies ahead in his creative journey.
“This is an incredible honour. To be recognised by the SAFTAs places me alongside industry legends, which is a humbling experience. My journey has been one of evolution, and winning this award feels like a significant milestone.”
According to Klassen his background in editing has undoubtedly influenced his directing style.
“My editing experience gives me a unique perspective. I can anticipate what will work in post-production, and that foresight helps me to create a more cohesive vision when directing. It is about telling a story that resonates long after the screen goes dark.”

He added that one of the standout aspects of Skeem Saam, is its ability to stay rooted in authenticity while evolving with the times.
“What sets us apart is our generational legacy. We have kept 90% of our original cast, and our audience has grown with them. The connection we have built with viewers is something that keeps the show relevant.”
As someone with a deep respect for the industry’s traditions and innovations, Klassen also sees his SAFTA win as a catalyst for future opportunities.
“This award is not just a personal achievement, it is a tool to foster trust with funders and production companies for my future projects. It opens doors for new collaborations and funding for creative ideas.”
