Concerned resident fears that children will drown in dam

He says that the dam is deep and some of the children who swim there are as young as 7.

SEBOKENG. – A concerned resident says he fears for the health and safety of the kids who have been swimming in a dam off the Golden Highway in Sebokeng zone 19. He says that the dam is deep and some of the children who swim there are as young as 7.

“Something has to be done to ensure the safety of the kids because we have been chasing them away from this place but they do not listen. I’m not sure if their parents are aware that the kids are swimming in the dirty water. It will make them sick. I also don’t want to wait until one of them drowns before something is done about the situation.”

Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Thabiso Radebe says, “The municipality will inform the relevant ward councilor about the matter and urge him to to call a public meeting in the affected area. This will be to request the parents and other community members in the neighbourhood to exercise consistent supervision on the kids’ whereabouts, especially now that some learners are no longer attending school due to exams.

Radebe added that, secondly, the municipality will further investigate to check what can be done with the existing situation
