RUST-TER-VAAL.- Angry community members allegedly set fire to a classroom at the Rust-ter-vall Secondary School in Rust-ter-Vaal last week.
The fire was apparently set at around 17:00 last Thursday. It is said that the community is demanding a new school they were promised by Gauteng MEC of Education, Panyaza Lesufi. According to the schools Head of Department (HOD) Lebelo Msibi, the damage amounts to some R80 000. This includes textbooks, educators’ files, a chalkboard, chairs and desks, including the asbestos building the class was made of.
“When arriving in the morning I was told that the building had been set alight by the community. At the time educators and learners were not on the premises as they usually knock off at around 14.30. Police forensics arrived in the morning to take some photos. Since Monday there has been no schooling.” No-one has been arrested in connection with the fire.
