Four 11kV breakers totally destroyed in substation explosion

Repair work is well underway but some areas are still without electricity

 
VANDERBIJLPARK. – Councillor Gerda Senekal of the VF Plus reports that the following damages were noted after yesterday’s explosion at the substation in Curie Boulevard, Vanderbijlpark:

1. It was found that 4 X 11kV breakers were totally damaged beyond repair
2. Cables from HV yard burnt and destroyed.
3. The 10 MVA transformer got damaged. The 11kV isolator also got damaged.

As a result of the fire incident the following areas are currently without power:
-Cw1-Cw6
-Stephanopark
-Bonnane
-Part of NW7
-Bophelong Ext 1-18
-Vanderbijlpark Water tower

The planned repair work to be urgently started by tonight (Tuesday evening) is as follows:
-Testing of 3 transformers
-Testing of 2 X 88kV switches
-Testing of 11 X 11kV breakers
-Replacement of 11kV cables
-Replacement of 4 X breakers
-Testing of 2 Ring Main unit
-Transportation and rigging of 2 transformers
-Connecting and commissioning of 1 transformer
-Disconnection of 1 transformer

The department is working towards restoring the power supply at the earliest possible time.

Councillor Senekal says updates will be provided as the repairs proceed.
