Zama-zama’s disrupt electric supply

It is believed that the Zama-zama's are men from Lesotho, and are bravely joined by women amongst them.

BOPHELONG. –  Copper thieves, famously known as ‘ Zama-zama’s have disrupted the supply of electricity to at least one water treatment plant in Rietspruit farm in Vanderbijlpark since Monday.

The theft of the copper took place openly near Bophelong from 18 to 21 April. The water treatment plant was left powerless, which has dire implications for residents of that area. The process of digging, and stealing of the copper, started at a location near Marikana squatter camp and continued on as far as Bophelong Extension 16.

It is believed that the Zama-zama’s are men from Lesotho, and are bravely joined by women amongst them. Only one arrest was made yesterday, although it is said that different groups are involved.
