Former Banyana Banyana defender inspires local learner to win history prize
Mokoena made not only the school proud but the entire Vaal region.
SEDIBENG.- Sebokeng Technical High School is celebrating a remarkable achievement after learner Refilwe Mokoena secured third position in the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History Competition held recently in Cullinan, Pretoria.
Mokoena focused her presentation on her heroine, choosing former Banyana Banyana defender Rose ‘Pona’ Jijane as her role model.

Adding a special connection to the project, both Mokoena and Jijane come from Boipatong.
To prepare for the competition, staff members Nonhlanhla Mamba and Vangile Lebusa worked tirelessly with the school to ensure Mokoena was fully ready.
As part of her preparation, Jijane was invited to the school, where Mokoena conducted an interview with her. It was an exciting experience for the learner, who came into close contact with her role model for the very first time. The unforgettable experience for Mokoena inspired her to consider playing soccer herself following their meeting.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Mamba said that Mokoena made not only the school proud but the entire Vaal region. She noted that this is one of the biggest school competitions, making a third-place finish a massive achievement that the school will cherish for years to come. Mamba added that the success serves as a powerful motivation for other learners.

“As the school, we are proud of Mokoena, and this will serve as motivation to other learners. We want to thank Rose Jijane for her contribution to Mokoena’s success. We also want to thank Sedibeng Ster for helping us locate Jijane. This shows the importance of strong relationships between schools and our local newspapers,” said Mamba.
