HEIDELBERG. – This is after a team comprising of the Heidelberg SAPS Second Hand Goods Coordinator, Transnet Cable Theft Investigators and Crime Prevention Team jointly conducted visits to three Scrap-Metal Dealers checking compliance with the Second hand Goods Act. The aim was to check that the dealers are not receiving or selling illegal goods.
Police spokesperson Nombulelo Mohlakoana says, “During the visit and monitoring compliance, a 33-year-old female was arrested for possession of stolen property of a cable identified as that of Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM) with an estimated R3 000. The Scrap Metal Dealer is situated along Saga Street.
“The team further visited another Scrap Metal Dealer along Vaal Street. The police and Transnet investigators discovered a huge quantity of copper cables weighing 529kg with an estimated street value of R47 000.
“The copper cables were found hidden under the tins that were scattered on the floor. The manager, a 30-year- old male was arrested.”
The Sedibeng District Commissioner Major General Zodwa Molefe and Heidelberg Station Commander Colonel Phiwe Samuel Ndwandwe were pleased with the success and the joint efforts in reduction of cable theft.
The arrested suspects will appear in Heidelberg Magistrate Court soon
