Body of infant retrieved from Vaal River

An inquest docket has been registered.

SASOLBURG. – A lifeless body of an infant was found by the visitors in the Vaal river on the side of Viljoenskroon on 19 September around 09.00. People visiting the Vaal River said they were walking along the river bank at the time they made the discovery. Police Spokesperson, Captain Malebo Kgosana said a preliminary investigation revealed that  the mother had given birth before she put the baby inside the basket and threw it in the river. The infant was found with its umbilical cord still attached. “She was unfortunately declared dead at the scene,” said Kgosana. An inquest docket has been registered. The police are investigating and no arrest has been made.
