Mother of murdered teen nearly attacks suspect in courtroom

VANDERBIJLPARK.- The mother of a 5-year-old murdered child almost attacked the accused as he stepped out of the police waiting cell to the dock but just managed to stop herself.
Sitting just behind her in the courtroom, dressed in a moarning clothes, was the mother of another 11-year-old murdered son.
Veliswa Novenga (42) could be seen lunging forward before sinking back into her chair. This at the time, the accused briefly appeared at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court for bail hearing on 25 February. He is charged with two counts of murder as well as two counts of attempted murder. The bail hearing for this case, which the court considers to be a serious crime, has been postponed until 23 March. In his last appearance, the accused abandoned bail. Both children were hanged from a tree by the accused who lured them into a forest outside their home in Boipatong. The incident happened on 18 January 2022. The mother of the murdered little boy admitted she almost attacked the suspect in court.
“That was the first time I saw the suspect since he was arrested in a hiding place in Johannesburg. I knew the Justice Department was eventually going to grant him bail. But the thought of him getting bail and freely walking the streets made me sick,” she said.
Picketing outside the court were the Brigade working for community safety fighting for justice and against gender-based violence.
