ORANGE FARM. – David cycles hours from Orange Farms his workplace in Randburg each day.
The 45-year-old recently rode his bicycle almost 600 km overnight from Johannesburg to Venda and back, to honor his late father who taught him how to cycle.
The father of three told Sedibeng Ster that he started biking a couple of years ago to improve his health.
“I started cycling years back and this has been beneficial for my health, especially in helping me manage my diabetes.
“When I saw that cycling was helping me, I decided to motivate and encourage members of my community in joining this as a sport by riding with me on a tandem bike,” he said.
David further added that he also learnt that cycling reduces stress.
“I was always angry due to the illnesses that I have blaming life and those around me. Cycling has helped me to relax and always keep happy. I would cycle to work and be on my feet for twelve hours or more and never feel the urge to be angry,” he added.
Sharing his jubilation for this donation, David said he is overjoyed.
“This bicycle will help many people in my community to improve their health as well. This isn’t my bike but the bike of the community,” he said.
Munene Khoza, Senior Reputation Manager for Team Vitality shared how they discovered the touching story of David which led them to donating the bike to the man.
“A couple of months ago we came across a viral video of David talking about his passion for cycling and we were inspired and felt that we can support him. We reached out to David and he told us all he needed was a tandem bike,” she said.
“Today is beautiful and it literally brings one to tears seeing the community coming out in their numbers to support David, that’s really powerful.”
David’s wife Linah Sejobe was part of the entourage gathered during the donation said she is happy that her husband will help many others as he always did.
“What makes me happy more than anything is the story of my husband’s health. He had asthma and when he started cycling it stopped. This showed me that cycling is a good thing for him,” she concludes.
