Escaped tiger’s tracks spotted this afternoon in Walkerville

Members of the community are advised against pursuing the tiger upon sighting it as it is aggressive and in attack mode.

WALKERVILLE. – The search for escaped 8-year-old tiger [Sheebah] has resumed on Monday morning. The female tiger is said to have escaped from its cage after unknown people cut the fence caging Sheebah and another male tiger.

Despite an all-night man hunt by local authorities including the local Community Policing Forum (CPF), Meyerton police, SPCA and other stakeholders, the task teams were at it again.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Gresham Mandy from De-Deur sector 2 CPF said “We are on the ground and have got drones up there. There’s also a chopper that is assisting in the search. We still haven’t found her”.

“We picked up fresh tracks in the vicinity close to where we are stationed. We know she is in the vicinity and we are sure that it’s not going to take too long to capture her. We have involved the national police who will be sending out their tracking team. We have been here since Sunday morning,” he said.

The missing tiger attacked and mauled a 39-year-old man who stays in the area.

According to reports, the cat has also attacked several other animals including two dogs and a pig.

Mandy says they have now taken a break from the search and will resume as soon as the SAPS national tracking team who will co-ordinate the search arrives.

He further cautioned neighboring residents to report Sheebah when sighted.

“She is a wild animal even though she has been kept in a domestic environment. We would caution everyone against pursuing her if sighted. Rather call the local CPF or 10111. The plan is to dart and relocate her,” he said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello has warned the community to be vigilant as the tiger is aggressive.
