ELM continues to engage Eskom

Eskom was granted an order allowing by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to attach R1.3 billion worth of assets of ELM.

SEDIBENG.-  The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) has said that it continues to engage the national electricity supplier, Eskom.

Eskom attached ELM’s bank accounts late last year.

The attachment came after Eskom was granted an order allowing by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to attach R1.3 billion worth of assets of ELM for its “continued failure” to settle its accounts and arrears.

The municipality said that this year, Executive Mayor Sipho Radebe, MMCs for Finance and Revenue Hassan Makola, and of Basic Services, Vincent Jones together with the Municipal Executive team led by the Acting Municipal Manager continued to engage Eskom in order to find a lasting solution for both the municipal debt and restoration of infrastructure.

The team was joined by leaders of both the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and Independent Municipal & Allied Trade Union (IMATU) including Provincial leaders.

“If it means talking to Eskom every hour of every day, that we will do,” said Radebe.
