Self-taught DJ champions deep house scenes

She started deejaying with a phone and now she is hitting CD jays. Dez is the popular female face of deep house in the Vaal.

Her love for music and Dj mixing software on her mobile phone led her to being the most popular deep-house female disc jockey.

Desiree ‘Mpho ‘ Pitso is the new queen of deep house scenes in the male-dominated midnight lifestyle.

According to the 32-year-old Sebokeng born and bred musical genius, she wants to share her passion for music while empowering and encouraging many women.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, popularly known as Dez, she explained her musical experience in playing for many local nightlife spots.

“I started playing music in December 2020 after getting professional lessons from a number of well-known individuals in the deejaying industry. Growing up, I always loved music, even back in high school, I was known for having the latest music in any genre,” she said.

“My journey in deejaying was inspired by a music mixing app that came with my phone. I was fascinated by how it fused music, that is what made me fall in love. Playing on my phone wasn’t enough, so I opted to get professional lessons. Although I always felt like I knew what I was doing, CD jays gave me hard time,” she added.

Dez said she always wanted to play Amapiano however, she was advised otherwise.

“My first love in music was the new Amapiano but my mentors decided to teach me how to play deep house. It wasn’t always love at first sight, but learning how to fuse the scarce music together, my love for deep house grew fonder,” she said.

“There are a few women in this side of music genres and mastering what I do makes me enjoy it. It has been an awesome journey and I see myself going very far. I’ve got a number of opportunities to play in many groove joints in my neighborhood and the feedback I get warms my heart,” she said.

Dez said she aims to see many other female deejays playing her type of music to grow their number.

“We are very few and seeing other female deejays play makes me happy. I would like to see more females in our genre,” she said.
